Charity is often more than simply opening your wallet. Sometimes it means giving back to your local community in a more hands on way. Sure, anyone can write out a check and make helping others someone else’s problem, but the spirit of giving is not a spectator’s sport. Real charity comes from the heart, when a person is moved by compassion to lend a hand where it is most needed. You can donate your time, money and of course certain products in good condition that you no longer use. However, it’s the products that seem to be so puzzling for many people. If the item is relatively costly, you may want to write it off as a tax deduction. While a 501(c)3 charity will give you a receipt, it’s your job to prove to the IRS at the end of the tax year that the item was worth a certain amount of money. This will require research and documenting like items/years/conditions and preferably taking photos before making a donation.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Nepal on Saturday, April 25, 2015 has more than 5,000 people dead and eight million badly affected, as of the latest count. These grim figures are expected to rise rapidly as rescuers continue to dig through the destruction. Nepal’s Prime Minister says the death toll could be as high as 10,000. Reports reaching the world say entire villages have been flattened and almost three million children are in urgent need of assistance.

The earthquake is Nepal’s deadliest tragedy since 1934, when a powerful earthquake also struck the region. Aftershocks and avalanches followed, widening the scope of devastation beyond imagination. And Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. If one in four of its people lived on US$50 cents per day before the earthquake, think how they are faring now and in the days and months to come.

It’s not enough for us who are in safer lands to commiserate with the people of Nepal by watching the news on cable television or through the internet in the comforts of our homes. UN World Food Programme

The organization was quick to respond to the disaster in Nepal. It is transporting food and relief supplies to the area and will welcome your donation.

Mercy Corps

World Vision

The organization’s staff were in Nepal immediately to bring food and emergency supplies. Its priorities are providing clean water and sanitation, shelter, food and protection and care for children. Its aim is to raise $3 million and provide relief for 100,000 people across Nepal. It also aims to help the children recover physically and emotionally from the trauma. International Medical Corps

Catholic Relief Services

Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters (SARAID)

SARAID is a British charity whose mission is to save the lives of innocent victims of disasters. A team is now in Nepal and is working as part of a UN-coordinated rescue operation. They are checking destroyed buildings for possible entrapped persons and have brought an electric generator and power tools to cut through concrete and steel.

SARAID is composed of volunteers and does not accept government funding. Donations are highly appreciated.

Oxfam America

Tzu-Chi

How Much Should You Really Give to Charity?

Sharing one’s blessings is an admirable trait that people must practice in their lives. One form of sharing is giving to charity.

It should be understood, however, that while giving to charitable organizations is a good act, not everyone is obliged to do it. Give only on your own free will like when you have something, money or otherwise, extra. It is understandable when you can’t give to charity when you are having financial difficulties.

Remember that the amount you decide to give depends on your personal circumstances. But when you decide to share, give as much you can because there are many underprivileged people who will greatly benefit from your donations maybe not in your own place but in other areas and countries. Two-Year Old Girl from the Philippines Needs Cochlear Implant

Rhyka Tiangco turns two today but there won’t be a big birthday party for this girl from the Philippines. Her parents, Rhyan and Kathrina Jane, need all the money they can get for a cochlear implant for their daughter. Rhyka was born with profound deafness in both ears, noticed only when she was 15 months old and unable to say a single word.

Rhyka was delivered by emergency caesarean section due to her mother’s condition of having low amniotic fluid in the sac that held the baby. This condition hinders the proper development of the child in the womb and may even lead to death. To complicate matters, her umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. Born premature and underweight (1.6 kgs), Rhyka was in the NICU for 10 days.

What Rhyka needs now to grow up as normal as kids her age is to be able to hear other people talking so she can learn how to talk. Her doctor has recommended a cochlear implant since hearing aids cannot help her. She had tried them but can only hear if the sounds are very loud.

A cochlear implant is a device inserted by surgical procedure directly to the damaged cochlea (inner ear) to enable the person to hear sounds from the environment and other people talking. In little children, they will learn how to talk when they are able to hear, and awareness makes them feel more secure with their surroundings. The sooner the implant is done, the better the chances are for the child to grow and develop normally.

But funds are scarce. Rhyan and Kathrina are both working, but their combined salaries for a year can’t pay for the device and attendant costs of hospitalization, etc., let alone their daily expenses. A cochlear implant costs approximately $19,000 (P800,000 pesos) and hospital fees cost $4,700 (P200,000) for a total of $23,700 or P1 million pesos.

Parents will do anything for their children, and Rhyan and Kathrina are no different. After exhausting all resources, they are now appealing for kind hearts to help them give their daughter a chance at a normal life. Any amount is welcome. A few dollars from many people adds up and hopefully, Rhyka can have her implants. If you would like to see this little girl talking and playing with other children, please donate to her cause. Stamping Out Sex Trafficking through Blogging

When one of the most popular bloggers in the world writes about sex trafficking, the world pays more attention. In what is perhaps the best use of blogging celebrity we’ve seen, Heather Armstrong of Dooce.com has made known the work of The Exodus Road, an organization that,

“…exists to empower the deliverance of sex slaves. Operating primarily in Southeast Asia, India, and the United States of America, we find teams already on the ground doing the vital work of finding and freeing victims with local police and we fuel their work by providing covert gear, operational funding, training, and networking support.” (Source)

The problem of prostitution- especially forced prostitution- in Asia has been around for many, many years. Stories of Korean comfort women are only recently coming to light, with the latter slapping their own government with a lawsuit that claims that the government forced them into the sex slavery; the ultimate betrayal for sure.
